HAMBURGER………CUPCAKES 10

September 24, 2010

I had wanted to make these for hhhhhhhhages….. and what better excuse than the birthday of my equal favourite #1 loved one! Considering his fave savoury food is ‘actual’ burgers, I thought these were a cute idea for the big ol’ bday cakearoo……

I’d seen many variations across the globe on other food blogs….. from full sized cakes as burgers to incy wincy cheeseburgers, there were tonnes of “burger cake” thingy’s….In any event, I felt the need to make the “Phoodie” version…..so here it is!

Start by baking some plain as the nose on your face (is that the saying or have i just invented yet another one that doesn’t make sense?!) vanilla cupcakes…. Once cooled, slice the tops off and keep ’em to the side…..

Thennnnnnnnn, bake some chocolate cupcakes, again, simple, humble, chocolate cupcakes…..actually, you might want to find a chocolate brownie cupcake recipe as that’s what I did and the cupcakes end up a little denser, more crinkled on the top, more meat patty-ish – which of course is what y’all want! Once they are cooked, again, slice the tops off and put them to the side…..below is a pic of the redundannnnnt bottom!

You’ll end up with a billion “bottom of the chocolate cupcake” bits….so……. feed ’em to your dog…….

OH GOSH, OH GOODNESS, NO, NO, DO NOTTTTTTTTT feed them to your dog, chocolate kills dogs – or is that an urban myth?! Anyway, just to be safe, DO NOT FEED THEM TO YOUR DOG.

Once you have all your cupcakes cut up and at the ready, sandwich one chocolate ‘top’ in between a vanilla ‘top’ and a vanilla ‘bottom’, like so……

Continue to do this with the remainder of the cakes….

Now you need to make the ‘ketchup’ and ‘mustard’…. so first step is to whip up some vanilla buttercream frosting / icing…..and then add food colouring until you get your perfect red and your perfect yellow! (Add the colouring slowwwwwly as a little bit goes a long way where this stuff’s concerned!)

Next, you want to pipe some ‘ketchup’ and some ‘mustard’ onto your ‘meat patties’, sooooooooooooo grab your disposable piping bags, (if you haven’t got any, do what I did and make some cones out of baking paper!) and go wild!

Now it’s lettuce time! Shove some shreadded NOT DESICATED, shreaded, coconut in a plastic bag and drop in about 4 drops of green food coloring, then shake the bag around like there’s no tomorrow…..peek inside and HOOOOOOOOOORAH – look what you’ll see……..

Every burger needs some lettuce…….be generous, greens are GOOD for you!

Now it’s nearly the end……slam back on those vanilla tops……brush them with a little melted honey so that the seasame seeds (that you need to scatter to complete les burger look) stick and……

GAME OVER!! Hoorah! Plate ’em up….. deliver to friends……. ENJOYYYYYYY!

I really, REALLY like that these cupcakes are super clever, but Oh-so easy to make :) Even *I* can do that (I think) and manage to get something looking remotely like a burger. Thanks Phoodie :D

Phoodie, thanks for your blog, and in particular, the hamburger cupcakes. They have become a specialty of mine, I trot them out for kids events, RSPCA cupcake day and whenever I want to seem like a domestic goddess. My mum has also added them to her ‘regular’ list. My tip – use a plain chocolate biscuit for the burger – quicker than baking a special batch of chocolate cupcakes.
