Wandsworth Common – FOOD 0

July 23, 2009

So…..Wandsworth Wonderful it was….. and Doggy-sitting turned out to be even BETTER than we thought it would be! Not only were we the proud ”adoptive parents” (for 4 days!!!) of the cutest little puppa-roo in the world, but we absolutely stuffed ourselves stoooopid at some of the areas finest food establishments!

NUMERO UNO – Northcote Road, London

If you want to eat AUTHENTIC Italian food, experience excellent service, feel as though you are in Rome (ok maybe that’s pushing it a little) and have a great night out – you gotta come here. Husbies and I chose this off a list of recommendations from the people whose puppy we were looking after and we were NOT disappointed. Seriously – the food was ABSOLUTELY top-notch – we stared with mozza and tommy wrapper aubergines and delicious bread, then we shared veal Milanese and lobster pasta – cried – ate – cried – ate, then we were WAY TOO FULL to attempt to eat dessert – although – seriously – I was hysterically bawling when I saw the trolley  – I wanted to eat each and every thing that was on there. This place scores 1 million out of 10 – we will definitely return.

THE COUNTY ARMS – Wandsworth Common, London

Again, chosen off a list of recs – and again – NOT DISAPOINTED. In fact – the furthest from disappointed that is possible. As soon as you step inside you feel as though you are in the middle of the English countryside. Points must go to whoever designed this place as it is a true cross between a crisp modern bar kinda joint and a homely old-school British pub. Service was incredible – down to earth, yet tres profesh – food came very quickly – we shared a DEEEE-vine crayfish, mango and coconut salad and bread board for entrée – then we both had the burger and chips for main – cooked to perfection. For dessert – again – we were too full – but the very obliging waitress organised for our Pistachio Cheesecake and Apple Cinnamon crumble to be packed nicely for us to enjoy at ‘home’. Yum yum yum – awesome.

TACUBA – Balham, London

Best Mexican food we have eaten in London so far. Very cute and intimate setting – authentic cuisine – we ate tacos, fajitas and some other kind of deep fried tortilla called….ahhh…I can’t remember – but basically an already wrapped for you fajita that is deep fried so it is kinda taco-shell style. Guacamole was amazing, chicken was tender and delicious, service with a smile and the best margaritas in town! For dessert we had a fried pastry pizza looking thing with vanilla ice cream and honey – gimme more – tops tops tops.

BREAD ETCETERA – Clapham, London

Well I think I have to say this takes the cake.

I have been searching London high and low for 2 things; 1) good eggs (scrambled preferably) and 2) good coffee. Every time I enter a new café I am hopeful and in anticipation of finding them, and every time I leave, I am disappointed. BUT – today – well actually it was yesterday – I found both – under the one roof – here – at Breads Etcetera.

It’s located very randomly in the middle of hustling bustling Clapham with Sainsbury’s to the right and people in the trillions to the left – I arrived angry, flustered and starving after a bit of a hike from Wandsworth Common. We’d come because the people whose dog we were looking after had told us that BE had won some award (well 2nd place after The Wolsely) for best brekkie in London – don’t ask me who awarded it, what year it was, or any details for that matter – it’s just what they’d told us and they’re trustworthy folk – so we thought we’d give it a shot.

Eggs like my Mum used to make – and still does – creamy, thick yet light, substantial in form and decent serving – something that is pretty readily available in Sydney (Australia) but Chefs in this city seem to find near impossible. D.I.Y. bread station of crusty organic sourdoughs that you can help yourself to, slice as thin or as thick as you like and then bring back to your table to toast just the way you like it on your personal little Dualit toaster. We just adored it here.

As we sit here now staring sadly at each other missing puppa-roo more than words can say, we sip on water as that’s all we can manage after days of just stuffing ourselves silly!
