PHOODIE’S MISS 4’S RAINBOW BIRTHDAY PARTY! 20

March 17, 2014

a rainbow party intro

Welcome to another PHOODIE Birthday Party Post!

This year’s theme, (in case you’re still not sure!!) was RAINBOW!

Pictures speak louder than words.

So here you go!

A few notes / tips / FAQs answered for those wanting to host a similar party:

  • Start collecting decorations and all the bits and pieces as far in advance as possible. That way you will save money (as you will be on the look out for the cheapest items and not feel stressed to just buy stuff at an inflated price at the last minute!)
  • The cake itself was a 4 layer Rainbow Marble cake. Overall, it was 60cm long x 60cm wide x 30cm tall
  • The cake was filled and covered with a vanilla buttercream icing.
  • I made the 4 layers of cake over the period of a week and froze them. I brought them out of the freezer the night before the party, at which time I assembled them together and decorated it. This makes the job of creating such a LARGE and DETAILED cake actually achievable as you don’t need to find a period of 12 uninterrupted hours to work on it – I mean WHO has the time for that!?
  • Decorating the cake with the Smarties took 4 hours. I sorted them into colours before I began adding them to the cake as it made the 2nd part much faster! Start in the centre and work outwards in a circular pattern. DO NOT freak out about being perfectly neat, the overall effect is awesome regardless!
  • Instead of lolly bags as party favours I did “Rainbow Cookie Jars.” I bought the jars from a discount store and sterilised them. I then filled them with all of the ingredients (except butter) and stuck a recipe sticker on the back of the jar so the kids knew how much butter they needed to add to the mix and how to prepare them. The stickers were ordered online from Pink Frosting. The recipe for the shortbread can be found here (note: I added colourful choc bits to this recipe, about 1/2 cup per jar.)

Holy cow, Phoodie – that cake is beyond awesome. Not sure i would have the patience in a cake that size, but sure is food for thought for a smaller version.

Not sure if I’ve missed it or not but is there a recipe link for your buttercream icing? It looks so white and delicious, not like mine!

I love the rainbow cookie jars, I wanted to recreate these as my wedding favours as I love to bake. Would you please be able to provide the recipe as such?

I don’t actually remember the recipe I used but if you google Martha Stewart or donna Hay Choc Chip cookies you will definitely get a great recipe!
